Godsgrave (The Nevernight Chronicles #2) by Jay Kristoff - Review

Pages - 464
Format - Kindle

A ruthless young assassin continues her journey for revenge in this new epic fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Jay Kristoff.

Conquer your fear, conquer the world

Mia Corvere, destroyer of empires, has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church ministry do not believe she has earned it.

Her position is precarious, and she's still no closer to exacting revenge for the brutal death of her family. But after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia begins to suspect the motives of the Red Church itself.

When it is announced that Consul Scaeva and Cardinal Duomo will be making a rare public appearance at the conclusion of the grand games in Godsgrave, Mia defies the Church and sells herself into slavery for a chance to fulfill the promise she made on the day she lost everything.

Upon the sands of the arena, Mia finds new allies, bitter rivals, and more questions about her strange affinity for the shadows. But as conspiracies unfold, secrets are revealed and the body count rises within the collegium walls, Mia will be forced to choose between her loyalties and her revenge.

Pages - 448
Format - Kindle

In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen - Book Review

Pages -369
Format - Hardcover

A FUTURE CHIEFTAIN.
A FUGITIVE PRINCE.
A TOO-CUNNING BODYGUARD.
AND ONE GRUMPY GRAY TABBY.

Fie abides by one rule: look after your own. As the future chieftain of a shunned caste of mercy-killers, she relies on her wits and bone magic-drawn from the teeth of dead witches-to protect her band. The Crows take more abuse than coin, so when they're called to collect the royal dead, Fie hopes they'll find the payout of a lifetime.
When Fie discovers that Crown Prince Jasimir and his crafty bodyguard, Tavin, have faked their deaths to escape the ruthless Queen Rhusana, she's ready to cut her losses-and perhaps their throats. But Jas offers a deal the she can't refuse: make sure e lives to see the throne, and he'll protect the Crows when he reigns.
To outrun and outwit the queen, the trio forge an uneasy alliance that is soon tested by old secrets, shifting allegiances, and forbidden feelings. As Rhusana and her band of deadly trackers loom ever closer, the three fugitives must discover what they're each willing to sacrifice to save their own.

The plot of this book is fast paced and captivating.

All the characters definitely have their own personalities which along with all their realtionships between each other & are well written & relatable.

The only way I can really fault this book is the big build up and then as soon as the problem as such is resolved then it stops, Would have maybe wanted the resolution part of the book drawn out a chapter or two more.

Overall I found this book to be well thought out & competently written. The castes and magic system are easy to understand and not info dumped but slipped into the story here and there so as not to overload you with information which I found appealing. I also loved the concept of using the different teeth for different forms of magic and that each tooth had a story to tell.

If your looking for a gateway into books involving magic systems then would recommend this one. A quick, easy & enjoyable read.
